American Legion

HISTORY

Back in 1974 fifty-two members of the American Legion petitioned the Department of Florida and the American Legion Headquarters in Indiana to establish their own Post in Treasure Island.

The Charter was issued December 23, 1974, making a lot of people very happy for the holidays.

Through the 1970’s and 1980’s of some smooth and bumpy growth, including a few setbacks, the Post relocated twice, grew and most members joined together to make it flourish into the 1990’s.

Through ups and downs the late 90’s resulted in some temporaray closings, re-openings, shifting of officers – all growing pains – one could anticipate but not hoped for.

Requested to vacate their location at the end of 2002, the year 2003 brought many transistions.

Ironically, Post 158 purchased the property that was our second rented home, just about where it started, coming to a full circle in three decades.

The rededication on November 11, 2003 brought us together again, working in unison… The only way to succeed, to really accomplish that… WE NEED YOU!

And finally, we reopened on February 20, 2004 as a viable functioning Post.

Almost 20 years later, the Post is still functioning, with the same ups and downs, which is typical most likely as all Posts.
